Rec. Centre

The Wawanesa Recreation Center was completed in 1975. Within one facility, it combines a full size artificial ice Hockey Rink, a Curling Rink with 4 sheets of artificial ice and a pistol and rifle range. Wawanesa is home to national and international championship marksmen. The facility is used extensively during the winter months as the centre plays host to a number of minor sports teams and holds many hockey tournaments and curling bonspiels annually.

There are several curling clubs that make use of the facility. The men’s club, women’s club, and senior leagues hold league play during the curling season. As well, there is a curling league in the school that makes use of the building twice a week during the winter months.

The hockey rink is used mainly for hockey, but occasionally for figure skating as well. The rink boasts several minor sports teams, high school hockey, and a senior level team.

The centre is also available during the summer to rent for events like auctions, etc.

Project Executive Summary: The Wawanesa and District Recreation Centre Retrofit will upgrade the ice plant systems and supporting infrastructure at the facility located in Wawanesa, Manitoba. Originally constructed in 1975, the Recreation Centre is enjoyed by residents of all ages for sport and recreational pursuits and represents a hub of community activity during most months of the year.
Due to the deteriorating condition of the Centre’s ice plants, however, the arena chilling system now requires replacement to improve efficiency and to ensure continued operations. Our project will replace the Centre’s 45-year-old ice plants with new, energy efficient units and construct an accompanying building to house the new equipment.
The new ice plants, which will cool the ice for the Centre’s hockey and curling rinks, will remedy the current operating inefficiencies. Based on RETScreen analysis, the percentage of total estimated energy savings from our project are anticipated to be 30.4% with an estimated Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reduction of 29.6%.

The project is expected to begin construction in May 2022 and be complete by September 2022 at a total cost of $1,124,500.
