Notice Regarding Live Trapping Cats
We have noticed more residents purchasing or borrowing live traps to capture cats and then contacting Animal Control for pickup. To help ensure animals are handled safely and responsibly, we ask that residents contact Animal Control before setting a live trap.
Animal Control is happy to provide guidance in advance; however, we are not able to monitor or respond to privately set live traps or collect animals from private traps without prior arrangements.
If you choose to set a live trap before making arrangements with Animal Control, you are responsible for the animal’s care and safe transport. Please make an appointment and bring the animal directly to the shelter as directed.
Under Manitoba’s Animal Care Act, anyone in possession or control of an animal has a legal duty to provide for its welfare. Live traps are intended for short-term use only and must not be used as housing.
Cats should not be left in traps for extended periods or exposed to weather conditions. While confined, the animal must be provided with appropriate shelter, food, water, and access to a litter box until it can be transported.
If you believe a cat needs to be trapped, please contact Animal Control first so appropriate arrangements can be made.
